Middle School Math

Speak Agent’s Middle School Math program significantly improves outcomes by developing reasoning, modeling, algebraic thinking, and multimodal math communication skills.

How? By seamlessly integrating academic language activities, real-world math stories, reading and writing scaffolds, tools for students to create and share word problems, and many other research-based Math+Language strategies.

Middle school math courses available to tailor to your existing curriculum:

The Learning Progression

Every Math+Language lesson at middle grades has two phases:

  1. We begin by introducing the key mathematical concepts and building background knowledge. Students engage in listening, speaking, reading, and morphology practice using visual aids and simplified, age-appropriate texts.
  2. Next, we connect your curriculum content to the real world. Students build content knowledge by communicating their reasoning. In this second phase, we ramp up the text complexity and add opportunities for open-ended expression and math modeling.

Activities and Features

Three apples. The middle apple has a measuring tape around it. Text on top says See How We Measure Up.
Examples of the Word Gallery activity

Word Gallery is a great way to visually introduce new math concepts to your class. Present it to the class on a projector or by screen sharing in Zoom. Or, students can use it as a digital word wall!

Examples of the Read Along activity, focused on Geometry

Math reading passages in Speak Agent, such as this Read Along, serve as a focal point for classroom discourse. All student responses are captured in the digital portfolio.

Examples of the student portfolio.

The digital portfolio stores open-ended responses, writing samples, voice recordings, and creative projects.

Diagram It! provides opportunities to review, label, and explain diagrams in writing or recorded speech. Writing and speaking activities in Speak Agent capture student work samples in a digital portfolio, providing actionable data.

Math Puzzle Maker enables students (gr. 3+) to create math puzzles for their peers to solve. Students can then compare answers with the puzzle creator.

Story-based activities like Tall Tales use context clues to develop comprehension of the material.

Examples of the Scrambled Sentences activity

Sentence processing activities like Scrambled Sentences build comprehension by breaking mathematical explanations and stories into manageable chunks that students can manipulate.
