Middle School Science

Speak Agent’s Middle School Science program significantly improves outcomes by helping students to explore scientific phenomena, acquire complex concepts, make claims, analyze evidence, and communicate reasoning.

How? By seamlessly integrating academic language activities, real-world science stories, reading and writing scaffolds, tools for students to create visual representations of data and ideas, and many other research-based Science+Language strategies. Students engage with digital activities across all six language domains: listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, and representing.

Activities and Features

An image of a mountain landscape. Text says Take a Tour.
Examples of the Read Along activity

Science reading passages in Speak Agent, such as this Read Along, serve as a focal point for classroom discourse. All student responses are captured in the digital portfolio.

Examples of the Diagram It activity

Diagram It! provides opportunities to review, label, and explain diagrams in writing or recorded speech. Writing and speaking activities in Speak Agent capture student work samples in a digital portfolio, providing actionable data.

Examples of the Word Gallery activity

Word Gallery is a great way to introduce new science concepts to your class. It works well on a projector or screen sharing in Zoom. Or, students can use it as a digital word wall!

Example of the My Voice recording activity

Speaking activities like My Voice encourage students to verbalize science terms and concepts and to explain processes, patterns, or conclusions.

Examples of Scrambled Sentences in action

Sentence processing activities like Scrambled Sentences build comprehension by breaking scientific explanations and stories into manageable chunks that students can manipulate.

Example of the Tall Tales activity

Story-based activities like Tall Tales use context clues to develop comprehension of the core content.

A screenshot of the Vocab Lab activity

Vocab Lab presents a short passage that uses a target scientific term in a real-world context. Next, students combine basic words they have already learned to define the target term.

Screenshots of the student portfolio

The digital portfolio stores open-ended responses, writing samples, voice recordings, and creative projects.
